“Taking Over” is Skunk Oil’s reflection on the quiet ways we lose ourselves in the pursuit of validation. Set against a backdrop of 90s-inspired alternative rock — blending melodic hooks, punchy guitars, and subtle psychedelic textures — the song contrasts its bright, infectious sound with a more cynical undercurrent. At its core, it explores how the pressure to maintain a perfect image and seek external approval can gradually reshape who we are, blurring the line between what’s real and what’s performed.

There’s an irony in its delivery — an upbeat, almost nostalgic energy carrying a message that questions the very culture it thrives in. Rather than offering resolution, “Taking Over” leans into awareness, inviting the listener to recognize these patterns and decide where the line is drawn before the version we perform becomes the one that takes over.

ABOUT THE BAND:

Skunk Oil is a Los Angeles-based heavy alt-rock band blending the grit of Soundgarden, the edge of Queens of the Stone Age, and the melodic intensity of Muse into a sound that feels both familiar and forward-looking. Pulling from across generations of rock while carving out a modern identity, their music pairs hook-driven songwriting with a raw, unfiltered energy, often laced with subtle psychedelic textures.

Beyond sound, Skunk Oil leans into themes of self-awareness, identity, and the tension between authenticity and perception. Their recent material reflects a growing focus on the psychological and cultural patterns shaping everyday life — confronting everything from self-sabotage to the quiet pull of external validation.

Following the release of their independent EPs Skeletons in the Closet (2018) and Under Skinned (2022), the band has continued to build momentum through live performances at iconic Los Angeles venues like the Whisky a Go-Go and the Viper Room. They recently completed recording their debut full-length album at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios, marking the next chapter in their evolution.
